Ample Parking No One Can Find
The city of Knoxville has nine downtown garages, enough to keep up with even a busy downtown evening. The best part is, all of them are walkable from anywhere downtown. But when drivers kept circling looking for spots, not sure where they’d find one, Knoxville wanted a way to show drivers parking availability data. The goal was to help drivers navigate into parking spots faster to avoid unnecessary congestion and gridlock.
Budgeting for Parking Guidance
After careful deliberations, the city decided on a budget amount they could afford for parking guidance. Based on research of typical pricing, they decided they would buy parking counting systems for two of the downtown garages. They wanted to be able to show parking availability data on bright, visible signs for drivers to see. They also wanted parking data to be available on mobile apps so that drivers could plan ahead.
A Pleasant Surprise
When the City of Knoxville discovered the OpenSpace counting platform, their plans changed. The simple plug-n-play solution uses a much simpler more streamlined system for keeping traffic of parking availability. Without the need to wire and install sensors in every spot, OpenSpace cost a fraction of the typical systems the city had been planning to purchase. They now were able to budget to buy an OpenSpace system for five of their lots, instead of the initially planned two.
Parking Availability You Can Count On
The OpenSpace system shows up to the minute parking counting data outside of each of the city’s downtown garages. It’s also integrated with several apps including Parkopedia, ParkMe, and Downtown Knoxville so drivers can see availability data before they even head out. The City of Knoxville’s website also shows which garages have spaces open at any given time. While the city had aimed for 95% accuracy, the OpenSpace system is giving them an astounding 99.6% accuracy level.
